The Retail Pastry Department’s Senior Pastry Chef is a key leadership role within Blacksmith Bakery, responsible for upholding the highest standards of product quality, team performance, and operational excellence across all retail locations. This position works closely with Ownership, the Head Pastry Chef, Head Chef, and General Manager to ensure a seamless connection between production, training, and guest experience.
Core Responsibilities
Product Excellence & Brand Standards
Champion the execution of all pastry and menu items to meet Blacksmith Bakery’s quality and presentation standards.
Maintain consistency across all retail locations through hands-on leadership, coaching, and accountability.
Partner with the Head Chef and Head Pastry Chef to uphold and evolve production standards.
Training & Team Development
Lead all training initiatives for new and existing pastry staff, including preparation, production, stocking, cleaning, and operational procedures.
Facilitate structured training sessions for all seasonal and feature product launches, ensuring full team readiness.
Provide ongoing coaching, performance feedback, and development support in collaboration with the General Manager.
Operations & Inventory Management
Oversee ordering and receiving processes, ensuring accuracy, quality control, and timely communication with suppliers, including managing credits where required.
Manage and maintain inventory levels across food products, equipment, and paper goods.
Ensure all equipment is properly maintained, cleaned, and operating to standard, escalating concerns as needed.
Leadership & Scheduling
Collaborate with the General Manager on staff scheduling, shift coverage, and labour management, ensuring efficiency and compliance with labour standards.
Approve shift swaps and time-off requests while maintaining operational balance and minimizing overtime.
Ensure all opening and closing procedures are completed to standard, with consistent follow-up and accountability.
Communication & Collaboration
Maintain clear, professional, and proactive communication across all channels, including daily team communication platforms.
Participate in regular meetings at Head Office and the Production Facility to support product development and team alignment.
Work cross-functionally with Ownership and Marketing to develop and execute new products, including prototypes for launches and photography.
Guest Experience & Problem Resolution
Address customer inquiries and concerns promptly and professionally, escalating to the General Manager when necessary.
Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement by bringing forward ideas and solutions during team meetings.
Accountability & Coverage
Ensure continuity of leadership by delegating responsibilities appropriately during time off or absences.
Maintain a strong presence in daily operations, leading by example and reinforcing team standards.
Position Details
Schedule: Sunday- Thursday, 5:00 AM – 1:00 PM (flexibility required based on business needs)

Blacksmith Bakery is an artisan bakeshop café founded by Stephan Schigas and Bernice Farah in 2014.
Our flagship Café is built on the original site of Reid’s Blacksmith Shop, circa 1910 in Fort Langley BC. Today we have 4 Blacksmith Bakery locations in the Lower Mainland. Our second location, an express café, was opened at the Langley YNJ airport terminal building in the summer of 2020. In September 2022 we launched our third location, an express counter at our production facility in Maple Ridge. One month later we opened our fourth location, a bakeshop café bistro with licensed patio at Latimer Heights in Langley.
At Blacksmith we create real food using traditional artisanal methods, baked fresh daily on-site, in kitchens staffed by trained pastry professionals. Our hand forged viennoiserie, patisserie, cakes, eclairs, tarts, cookies, savories, thin-crust pizzas, gourmet bistro fare and casual comfort food draw customers from all over the Metro Vancouver region every day. At Blacksmith it’s not just about the food. We are very serious about coffee! Our baristas provide delicious, well-crafted coffee drinks created with our own Anvil espresso blend, roasted locally in East Vancouver by Agro Coffee Roasters.
